Artwork
My work is informed by the intricate beauty and complexity of biological systems at both the microscopic and macroscopic levels. My paintings begin with an abstracted image of the natural world—an isolated aspect of some organism or an ecological setting. Artistic improvisation then shapes the painting as I try to link various elements into a harmonious, organic whole.
I like to explore interactions of color and shape, at times emphasizing color and movement, at other times focusing on subtle transitions of color and form. Consequently, some paintings are dense and intimate landscapes of color and shape, others are more ethereal.
Brief Biography
I enjoyed both art and science from an early age. As a teenager I ran across some of my mother’s old oil paints and discovered that I liked spending time filling a canvas with images—primarily landscapes. In college, and later as a biology professor, I had little time for painting, but since retiring I have rediscovered the quiet, meditative joy of paint and brush. My artistic interest has shifted from representational work in oils to abstract painting with acrylics.
